Kính thưa ngài Tổng thống,

Tôi chân thành tri ân sự đón tiếp của ngài nhân danh tất cả dân chúng Hoa Kỳ. Là người con của một gia đình nhập cư, tôi hân hạnh được là khách mời của đất nước này, một đất nước được xây dựng bởi không biết bao nhiêu gia đình. Tôi mong muốn những ngày gặp gỡ và đối thoại này, những ngày mà tôi hy vọng sẽ được lắng nghe và chia sẻ, những hy vọng và ước mơ của người dân Hoa Kỳ.

Trong chuyến thăm của tôi, tôi được vinh dự phát biểu trước Quốc hội, nơi mà tôi hy vọng, như một người anh em của đất nước này, để đưa ra những lời động viên tới những người được mời gọi để hướng dẫn tương lai chính trị của quốc gia trong sự trung thành với những nguyên tắc nền móng của nó. Thưa Ngài Tổng thống, một lần nữa tôi cảm ơn về sự tiếp đón của ngài, và tôi mong những ngày này ở đất nước của ngài. Xin Chúa phù hộ cho nước Mỹ!

Mr President,

I am deeply grateful for your welcome in the name of all Americans. As the son of an immigrant family, I am happy to be a guest in this country, which was largely built by such families. I look forward to these days of encounter and dialogue, in which I hope to listen to, and share, many of the hopes and dreams of the American people.
During my visit I will have the honor of addressing Congress, where I hope, as a brother of this country, to offer words of encouragement to those called to guide the nation's political future in fidelity to its founding principles. I will also travel to Philadelphia for the Eighth World Meeting of Families, to celebrate and support the institutions of marriage and the family at this, a critical moment in the history of our civilization.
Mr. President, together with their fellow citizens, American Catholics are committed to building a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive, to safeguarding the rights of individuals and communities, and to rejecting every form of unjust discrimination. With countless other people of good will, they are likewise concerned that efforts to build a just and wisely ordered society respect their deepest concerns and their right to religious liberty. That freedom remains one of America's most precious possessions. And, as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or compromise it.
Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our "common home", we are living at a critical moment of history. We still have time to make the changes needed to bring about "a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change" (Laudato Si', 13). Such change demands on our part a serious and responsible recognition not only of the kind of world we may be leaving to our children, but also to the millions of people living under a system which has overlooked them. Our common home has been part of this group of the excluded which cries out to heaven and which today powerfully strikes our homes, our cities and our societies. To use a telling phrase of the Reverend Martin Luther King, we can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it.
We know by faith that "the Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home" (Laudato Si', 13). As Christians inspired by this certainty, we wish to commit ourselves to the conscious and responsible care of our common home.
The efforts which were recently made to mend broken relationships and to open new doors to cooperation within our human family represent positive steps along the path of reconciliation, justice and freedom. I would like all men and women of good will in this great nation to support the efforts of the international community to protect the vulnerable in our world and to stimulate integral and inclusive models of development, so that our brothers and sisters everywhere may know the blessings of peace and prosperity which God wills for all his children.
Mr President, once again I thank you for your welcome, and I look forward to these days in your country. God bless America!

Monsieur le Président,

Je suis profondément reconnaissant pour votre accueil au nom de tous les Américains. Comme fils d’une famille d’immigrés, je suis heureux d’être un hôte en ce pays, qui a été en grande partie bâti par de semblables familles. J’attends avec impatience ces jours de rencontre et de dialogue, où j’espère écouter et partager nombre des espérances et des rêves du peuple américain.
Durant ma visite, j’aurai l’honneur de m’adresser au Congrès, où j’espère, en tant que frère de ce pays, offrir des paroles d’encouragement à ceux qui sont appelés à guider l’avenir politique de cette nation dans la fidélité à ses principes fondateurs. Je me rendrai aussi à Philadelphie pour la Huitième Rencontre Mondiale des Familles, afin de célébrer et de soutenir les institutions du mariage et de la famille en ce moment critique dans l’histoire de notre civilisation.
Monsieur le Président, avec leurs concitoyens, les catholiques américains sont engagés dans la construction d’une société qui soit véritablement tolérante et inclusive, dans la sauvegarde des droits des individus et des communautés, et dans le rejet de toute forme d’injuste discrimination. Avec d’innombrables autres personnes de bonne volonté, ils nourrissent également le souci que les efforts pour bâtir une société juste et ordonnée avec sagesse respectent leurs plus profondes préoccupations et leur droit à la liberté religieuse. Cette liberté demeure l’un des plus précieux acquis de l’Amérique. Et, comme mes frères, les Evêques des Etats-Unis, nous l’ont rappelé, tous sont appelés à être vigilants, précisément en tant que bons citoyens, pour préserver et défendre cette liberté de tout ce qui la menacerait ou la compromettrait.
Monsieur le Président, je trouve encourageant que vous promouviez une initiative pour la réduction de la pollution de l’air. En acceptant cette urgence, à moi également il semble clair que le changement climatique est un problème qui ne peut plus être laissé à la future génération. En ce qui concerne la sauvegarde de notre ‘‘maison commune’’, nous vivons un moment critique de l’histoire. Il est encore temps d’opérer les changements qui s’imposent en vue «d’un développement durable et

intégral, car nous savons que les choses peuvent changer» (Laudato si’, n. 13). Un tel changement exige de notre part que, de manière sérieuse et responsable, nous prenions en considération, non seulement le genre de monde que nous pourrions léguer à nos enfants, mais aussi les millions de personnes vivant dans un système qui les a marginalisés. Notre maison commune fait partie de ce groupe d’exclus qui crient vers le ciel et qui aujourd’hui frappent avec force à la porte de nos maisons, de nos villes et de nos sociétés. Pour utiliser une expression imagée du Pasteur Martin Luther King, nous pouvons dire que nous avons manqué d’honorer un billet à ordre et le moment est arrivé de le faire.
Nous savons par la foi que le «Créateur ne nous abandonne pas, jamais il ne fait marche arrière dans son projet d’amour, il ne se repent pas de nous avoir créés. L’humanité possède encore la capacité de collaborer pour construire notre maison commune» (Laudato Si’, n. 13). En tant que chrétiens inspirés par cette certitude, nous voulons nous engager, de manière consciencieuse et responsable, pour la sauvegarde de notre maison commune.
Les efforts réalisés récemment afin d’amender les relations rompues et afin d’ouvrir de nouvelles portes à la coopération au sein de notre famille humaine sont des étapes positives sur le chemin de la réconciliation, de la justice et de la liberté. Je voudrais que tous les hommes et toutes les femmes de bonne volonté de cette grande nation soutiennent les efforts de la communauté internationale pour protéger les personnes vulnérables dans notre monde et pour encourager les modèles de développement intégral et inclusif, en sorte que nos frères et sœurs partout puissent connaître les bénédictions de paix et de prospérité que Dieu veut pour tous ses enfants.
Monsieur le Président, une fois encore, je vous remercie de votre accueil, et j’attends impatiemment ces jours à passer dans votre pays. Dieu bénisse l’Amérique!
