Letter from Bishop of Quinhon Diocese appeal for the victims of the typhoon and flooding

LETTER FROM BISHOP OF QUINHON DIOCESE
APPEAL FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE TYPHOON AND FLOODING
IN THE DIOCESE

Dear Benefactors,

Diocese of Quinhon is a combination of 3 provinces: Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen, in the middle of Vietnam. This is a arid, infertile area every year attacked by typhoon and flood. Recently, from 15 to 18 August 2013, a terrible flood came and covered the majority of the area of the Diocese under the water, especially the areas of the provinces Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh.

The effects of the disaster was so serious: loss of human lives and properties. Besides the damage of roads, bridges, dams, and other infrastructures, the people of the three provinces have to experience grave loss: 33 people died or got lost; more than 100,000 houses were covered under the water, many of those houses collapsed; the property, food were damaged; thousands of hectares of rice fields and other crops were lost, thousands of livestock were drown; drinking water was so contaminated that many diseases attack people. The disaster happens mainly in the countryside where many poor people are living; the victims who are poor suffer more severely: no shelter, no food, no drink, no medicine, without basic means to live on.

However, we hope that these people do not lack of love, because the Vietnamese people, who came from the same womb of the one Matriarch Au Co, have the custom of caring for one another, the good leaves protect the worn-out leaves. Moreover, Jesus who identified himself with the poor, taught us: Any good deed we have done to the needy, we have done it to himself (Cf. Mt 25:40). Charity is the mark of Christianity and is the uniform of the Christians.

With this letter I appeal your help, dear benefactors, to eliminate the effects of floods burdening on the lives of the victims and compensate partly for their losses. The Caritas Committee of Diocese of Quinhon will join hands with you to reach out your help to the victims no distinction of walk of life or religion.

On behalf of the disaster victims, I sincerely thank you for your generosity and support to them during this moment of need.
May God, the source of all goodness, bless you and your family abundantly.
